This sculpin comes in two genetically distinct forms, one living in sandy lakeshores inland and a coastal form that haunts quiet runs of small rivers and slips into brackish estuaries to spawn. It lays sticky eggs on the bottom, sometimes ventures into salt water near river mouths, and grows to about 30 centimetres.
