A large flathead of shallow bays, estuaries and seagrass beds, it lies flattened against the bottom waiting to ambush prey, and will push well up into fresh water. Reaching about 1.2 metres, it favours soft beds of mud, sand and eelgrass from the tideline down to around 30 metres. Its broad spade shaped head and upward eyes suit a life pressed to the seabed.
