One of the giants among rockfishes, the cowcod can reach a full metre and live for many decades on rocky reefs between about 90 and 300 metres. The young drift in open water over sand and clay before settling, and the female carries her eggs internally and releases live planktonic larvae. Slow growth and long life have left it heavily depleted by fishing.
