Bocaccio start life as pelagic young that drift into nearshore nurseries, then move out to rocky reefs and open bottoms as deep as 300 metres or more, hunting other fish including smaller rockfish. The female broods her eggs internally and releases live planktonic larvae, yet heavy fishing has driven the species to critically endangered.
