A small dark bigscale fish of the open deep, it lives in the bathypelagic blackness down past 3,000 metres. The young hang higher, around 250 to 500 metres, while adults sink into far deeper water. Reaching only about 11 centimetres, it has the large scales and oversized head that name its family.
