The hedgehog seahorse anchors its tail to corals, sponges and seagrass across muddy and sandy bottoms of the continental shelf, between about 10 and 80 metres. As in all seahorses the male broods the eggs in a pouch beneath his tail, and this one is listed as Vulnerable, pressured heavily by the dried seahorse trade.
