This anchovy relative pushes far inland up the Fly River of New Guinea, recorded almost 900 kilometres from the sea, yet it also turns up in brackish estuaries near the river mouth. It gathers in shoals in the deeper water of river channels and lagoons. So little has been studied that its status remains uncertain.
