Gulf Toadfish

Opsanus beta

Gulf Toadfish

A blunt, warty bottom dweller of seagrass beds and rocky cuts in shallow bays, the gulf toadfish lets nesting males sound a foghorn like grunt called the boatwhistle to court females. Despite its grim looks its glands hold no venom, though it has been linked to cases of ciguatera.
