Rows of light producing organs run along the body of the daisy midshipman, which spends the day buried in soft bottom offshore and rises at night to feed. It migrates into shallow reef areas to spawn in late spring, and neither its opercular nor dorsal glands are venomous. It grows to about 17 centimetres.
