Male plainfin midshipmen hum through the night from nests beneath rocks, a low drone made by vibrating the swim bladder to draw females to spawn. Rows of light organs dot the underside like a sailor's buttons, and the fish ranges from the intertidal zone, where it can sit out of water under cover, down to several hundred metres.
