A small grunt of sheltered bays and inlets, it rarely shows up in the clear oceanic water of outer coral reefs. Juveniles stay close to shore while adults forage over the bottom for small crustaceans and mollusks down to about 100 metres. At under 20 centimetres it is too small to draw the attention of fishers.
