This large flatfish lies flat against sandy and muddy bottoms in the bays and estuaries of the Brazilian coast, both eyes on its upper side after the young reshape themselves from an upright larva. Adults live alone, gathering only in small groups of a few to fifteen fish to spawn through the summer. Its fine flavour makes it a sought after food fish.
