A long, ribbon thin fish of the open ocean, tapering to a whip like tail and reaching well over a metre. The young live near the surface while adults sink into deeper water, from the sunlit layer down toward the upper twilight zone around 500 metres. It scatters its eggs into the plankton and leaves them to drift.
