Slim as a green twig with a long beaklike jaw, this needlefish hunts small fish at the surface of bays, harbours and mangrove lagoons and will run up into fresh water. Adults travel in small schools and attach filament tipped eggs to floating objects and weed, reaching about 90 centimetres.
