A small silvery fish of sandy and muddy coastal bottoms, the flagfin mojarra slips into estuaries, lagoons and the lower reaches of rivers down to about 25 metres. It forages by day in small groups, hovering close to the bottom and picking off prey or extending its jaws to sift the sediment. The menu runs from shrimps and mollusks to worms, zooplankton and detritus.
