A reddish snapper marked with a dark spot on the flank, this fish works hard bottoms around inshore reefs in the eastern Pacific, usually alone or in small groups but sometimes in big schools. Young grow up in estuaries and river mouths before moving out. It hunts invertebrates and fish and reaches about a metre.
