Free trailing threadlike rays beneath the head give this threadfin its name, feeling across sand and mud for buried worms, crabs, shrimp and clams. Tiny larvae and juveniles drift far offshore before the larger fish settle into shallow bays and estuaries. It grows to about 37 centimetres.
