The samson fish is a heavy bodied amberjack of inshore reefs, jetties and pylons, growing to about a metre and a half and favouring water between eighteen and twenty four degrees. It is a powerful swimmer that occasionally pushes into estuaries, and divers around southern Australia know it for the dense schools it forms.
