A round, deep bodied fish of harbours, brackish estuaries and the lower reaches of streams, it grazes among mangroves on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter. Its dorsal, anal and pelvic spines carry venom and can deliver a painful sting, so it is handled with care despite reaching only about forty five centimetres.
