A flat eyed nocturnal fish that shelters by day in surge pools, channels and under ledges, gathering in small schools. By night the bigeye spreads out to feed on plankton and small bottom creatures, mostly amphipods, mysids and polychaete worms. Young fish hide among weed along rocky shores in late summer.
