Unlike most damselfish that hug the reef, this one swims well above flat sandy and rubble bottoms around lagoon patch reefs and trawling grounds, often in small groups. It favours continental margins over truly oceanic waters and reaches about 14 centimetres, ranging down to around 80 metres.
