An apparent deep dweller among butterflyfish, the many spined butterflyfish has been seen only on a small stretch of well developed reef off Pitcairn. It feeds on zooplankton on seaward reefs down to about 45 metres, forms pairs to breed, and grows to about 21 centimetres.
