A stout fish of temperate rocky reefs, the barred knifejaw uses a beak like fused set of teeth to crunch hard shelled prey such as urchins and barnacles. The young, marked with bold bars, shelter beneath drifting rafts of seaweed before settling. It can reach about eighty centimetres.
