The cocos island flounder lies on pale sand from clear coastal bays out to reef lagoons, sometimes crawling over low stony reef. The tip of its first dorsal fin forms a lure that mimics a small shrimp or fish, waved to draw prey within reach. This little flatfish grows to about 12 centimetres.
