A small tilefish of steep outer reef slopes, it lives over rubble and talus patches and is usually seen in pairs that dive headfirst into their burrow the moment something approaches. It feeds on copepods, drifting tunicates and fish eggs picked from the water and reaches about 16 centimetres.
