A slender pink fish with golden stripes along the flanks and long trailing rays on the tail fin, it hunts crustaceans, small fish and squid over muddy and sandy bottoms. Young fish keep to shallower water before moving deeper with age. It is one of the most important commercial catches in the East China and South China Seas, often turned into fish balls, and that pressure has left its numbers vulnerable.
