One of only two living coelacanths, a lineage once thought extinct for millions of years, it shelters in deep carbonate caves on rocky slopes off Sulawesi. Divers have filmed individuals up to a hundred and forty centimetres at around a hundred and fifty metres, hanging in the dark and cool, and the species is rated vulnerable.
