It teams up with a digging alpheid shrimp on silty coastal reefs, inner reef flats and the sand and mud of sheltered lagoons and mangroves. The goby stands guard at the shared burrow while the shrimp keeps it in repair, both retreating underground at the first sign of trouble. It stays shallow, to about 18 metres, and grows to roughly 12 centimetres.
