A pufferfish that swims upriver to spawn, the obscure pufferfish moves freely between salt and fresh water and reaches about 40 centimetres. Like other Takifugu its flesh carries tetrodotoxin and is poisonous to eat unless prepared by skilled hands. It keeps to demersal coastal and estuarine waters.
