A prized shad that schools in coastal seas and runs far up rivers to spawn, sometimes more than a thousand kilometres inland, with some populations settling permanently in the great rivers like the Ganges. It feeds by filtering plankton from the water and grubbing through muddy bottoms. Reaching about sixty centimetres, it is one of the most valued food fishes of South Asia.
