A cardinalfish of silty coastal waters between 10 and 30 metres, this small fish drifts in loose groups above rocky outcrops and shipwrecks on muddy bottoms. It feeds at night on fish eggs and larvae, shrimps and drifting worms, and ventures into mangrove zones near river mouths.
