A deep bodied silvery fish of moderate depths on the continental shelf, it stays close to submerged reefs, rock ledges and rough ground off eastern Australia. It feeds in midwater rather than on the bottom, and the inside of its mouth is jet black and may glow faintly at night. Its pale flesh makes it a well regarded table fish.
