An eel shaped jawless fish, the inshore hagfish buries itself in bottom mud and migrates into deeper water to spawn, the only hagfish with a seasonal breeding cycle. It reaches about sixty centimetres, is eaten in Japan, and its hide is tanned into the leather sold worldwide as eel skin.
