A small deep sea fish lined with light producing organs along its belly, it lives in the open ocean and rises toward the surface at night to feed before sinking back by day. Adults hold in the twilight zone between about 200 and 1,000 metres, while the larvae and young stay in the upper layers. It belongs to the bristlemouths, among the most numerous fishes on Earth.
