Warty Prowfish

Aetapcus maculatus

Warty Prowfish

A slow, warty fish of rocky reefs, the prowfish drifts and shuffles over the bottom rather than swimming freely, relying on its lumpy, camouflaged skin to pass as part of the reef. Despite its spiny, venomous looking appearance it carries no venom glands at all. It sometimes turns up on an angler's line in shallow coastal water.
