Barred Surfperch

A surfperch of sandy beach surf, it works the breaking waves for sand crabs and digs out clams and other buried invertebrates, sometimes straying out to deeper water and rocky cover. Females carry their young inside and give birth to live pups rather than laying eggs. It grows to about forty centimetres and gathers in small groups.
