A deep bodied grunt of patch reefs and sloping rocky bottoms, the black margate shelters by day near caves, ledges, and wrecks. At night it hunts crustaceans, mollusks, smaller fish, and even the long spined sea urchin, and large fish from some areas can carry ciguatera.
