A tiny sprat of estuaries, lagoons and the lower reaches of rivers, the Malabar sprat tolerates a wide swing in salinity and pushes as far as ten kilometres upstream. It grows to about five centimetres and feeds, unusually, almost entirely on rotifers. It is sold fresh or salted and dried.
