A mojarra of shallow brackish water, this fish hunts over muddy bottoms in mangrove creeks and lagoons and often pushes well into fresh water. It grows to around forty centimetres, feeding on aquatic insects, crustaceans, small bivalves and detritus, and is sold fresh or turned into fishmeal.
