A climbing galaxias of clear, shaded, fast flowing streams, it can wriggle up wet rock and even small waterfalls using its broad fins. In New Zealand and parts of Tasmania the young drift out to sea before returning, though that marine phase is not always needed, and it reaches about twenty eight centimetres.
