A New Zealand galaxiid named for the pale bars across its dark body, the banded kokopu lives in shaded forest streams. It breeds in autumn, mostly through May, laying eggs among streamside vegetation that hatch when later floods wash the young out toward the sea. The juveniles return upriver as part of the whitebait run.
