Despite the trout in its name this galaxiid is a slim, scaleless fish of still and slow flowing waters close to the sea, gathering along rocky shore margins among plants, rocks and logs. Its young pass a stage at sea before returning to fresh water, a diadromous way of life. It grows to about twenty centimetres.
