A green eyed grazer of tide pools, rocky shallows and kelp beds, the opaleye feeds mainly on seaweed and homes back to its own pool after wandering. It can survive out of water by breathing air and will abandon a pool if conditions turn foul. In spring it forms dense schools in the kelp to spawn.
