This grunter keeps to river mouths and rocky to sandy coastal bottoms shallower than fifty metres, the smallest fish turning up right in the estuary while larger ones come from set nets and small trawls offshore. Barbels under the chin help it sense prey on the bottom. It is now scarce where it was once common.
