This pipefish keeps to still waters, turning up mostly in rivers, streams and estuaries where it picks worms, crustaceans and small zooplankton from quiet bottoms. The male broods the eggs in a pouch beneath his tail and can be carrying them at under eight centimetres. It reaches about 15 centimetres and rarely reaches a market.
