The striped trumpeter haunts broken rocky reefs rich in coral and other invertebrate life around southern Australia and New Zealand, sometimes in narrow channels between cliffs in deep fjords. A large temperate fish reaching well over a metre, it spawns inshore but appears to spend much of its life over deeper offshore ground.
