The largest damselfish of the eastern Pacific, the giant damselfish holds territory on rocky reefs just below the surf zone, grazing low growing algae and chasing off any fish or diver that strays too close. Pairs spawn over a patch of bottom where the eggs stick to the rock until they hatch.
