The Asian swamp eel breathes air and can wriggle across damp ground, surviving in everything from hill streams and flooded fields to stagnant ditches and even ephemeral pools that dry out. It burrows into moist earth, grows to about a metre, and like several of its kin begins life female before later changing to male.
