A prized food fish of New Zealand and southern Australia, the tarakihi feeds on worms, crustaceans, mollusks and brittle stars across the shelf and upper slope, down to four hundred and fifty metres. Juveniles stay near shallow reefs while postlarvae rise to the surface at night offshore.
