A slender, almost transparent icefish of Japan, the ariakehimeshirauo lives in the tidal stretches of rivers above the salt front, sixteen to twenty kilometres upstream. It strains plankton from the water, feeding mainly on a single copepod, and its tiny, restricted range has left it endangered.
